In the greatest adventure of the Victorian age, a famous explorer makes a heroic relief expedition to a beleaguered British outpost deep in the heart of Africa.

The British Empire, at its zenith, is shocked by the fall of Khartoum and the murder of General Gordon. But word reaches London that all is not lost; one garrison, commanded by the Emin Pasha, still holds out against the Mahdi leading the rebellion against the British in the Sudan. The Emin Pasha is hailed as a hero of mythic proportions, Gordon's successor, and England's hope. From the Queen to the mob, his rescue is demanded.

But only one man is up to the challenge of this mammoth expedition across 5,000 miles of the uncharted Congo, where no white man has walked Henry Morton Stanley, a hero of amazing complexity and daring. Whatever the cost, Stanley will rescue the Emin Pasha.

The Last Hero (Audible Audio Edition) Peter Forbath Simon Vance Inc Blackstone Audio Books

This is the best action, adventure, historical fiction I have ever read. Forbath creates the personality and motivation of Henry Morton Stanley and the temperament of a time period that combined to launch a near suicidal rescue mission up the Congo River and into the unexplored, deadly Itiri. Forbath's historical basis is sound and his use of the actual participants deft. Stanley is indeed a hero, though deeply flawed, and it is clear that no other man could have staged and survived such an adventure. This is a remarkable tale that I read every few years and it always leaves me with an appreciation for the title. There has never been another adventurer to equal Henry Morton Stanley.

I also highly recommend the audio narrated by Simon Vance.I will listen to that again, too.

The Last Hero (Audible Audio Edition) Peter Forbath Simon Vance Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

I just finished this novel. I am a historical fiction buff, and this book completely fulfilled my expectations. The characters (especially Henry Stanley) are real-life; the situations suspenseful and intense; the battle scenes dramatic and exciting. After reading this story I was motivated to buy The Siege of Khartoum to learn more about this time period. Can't wait to read about Gordon and his exploits and tragic death.
Well written great adventure book - historical fiction.
I've read this book three times over the years. Most books these days barely merit one read, let alone three. This book reminded me of how I felt as a child when I discovered those great books that could take you away to another world. Highly recommended!
I loved reading this book. It is very well written. It is based upon a true story - which is an AMAZING and extremely interesting story.
Highly recommended...
I am a person who has read literally a multitude of books during my lifetime. My tastes and range of interests are eclectic, but must confess that I have often been unable to resist works of epic adventure and struggle, to wit; The Gold of the River Sea, Journey, Into Thin Air, Something of Value, The Admiral, Much of Hemingway and Tolstoy, John McDonald , Martin Dibner and many others. If this genre is of interest to you, then I commend to you, Peter Forbath`s epic The Last Hero. It is a perfectly written account of one of the most dangerous journeys ever attempted in recorded history. Absolutely one of the five best I`ve ever read.
The first pages of Henry Morton Stanley's story, as seen through the eyes of a young clerk, hook the reader and draw us right in to a world so alive and enchanting as to make us forget we're reading a book. The characters, especially the hubris-laden Rock Breaker Stanley himself, but really everyone, down to the porters and secretarys and harem girls are brought to life with skillful prose, like an artist creating an entire scene with a few master strokes of the brush. The motivations of the characters, the mission, the secrets, and the labyrinth of political intrigue are all ultimately dwarfed by the epic journey itself, all the way across darkest Africa, as starvation, fatigue, disease, dread and suspicion all take their toll. Ultimately each character is worn down and stripped of all nonessential social and personal padding, until we discover what each man is truly made of. The characters rise to the best of humanity and fall into deepest depravity, as Henry Morton Stanley perseveres, rock-like, unremorseful, brilliant and enigmatic, perhaps the least understood but the most fascinating of the characters. The Last Hero is worth reading and re-reading, in the spirit of true exploration.

Simply a grand epic and Forbath is a master. We work in Congo and his novel The River Congo is simply the best book available to learn the history of this country. The Last Hero is historical fiction at its best.
